Tucking into a hearty meal at the end of the day is a great way to relax and remove the stresses of the daily routine before settling down for a pleasant evening. Removing this meal from your daily routine, as some Meal Replacement Diets do, can increase your stress levels dramatically, at best you can feel that you never get a chance to ‘switch off’ from daily trials and at worst this stress can lead to loss of sleep, psychologically prompted hunger pangs and failure of your weight loss plans as stress related snacking and binge eating derails the calorie controlled diet. More...

For some the physical discomfort of carrying excess weight is reason enough, while for other people there is a genuine medical need to lose fat and get fit. A far more common a reason to want to lose the excess pounds though, is the non physical element of being overweight, when the unhappiness with the image in the mirror begins to feed depression. More...

Of all the mysteries in life, taking the lift – or elevator if you are in the US - down is surely one of the greatest. I was in a car park recently and watched an entire family waiting for the lift to go down one floor to the exit. Although they were all significantly overweight, they were clearly able-bodied, so there was no obvious reason why they needed to wait for the lift. By coincidence, I saw them again about three hours later this time waiting for the lift to go up one floor, all of them eating ice-creams (it was a freezing cold day!). More...

Many Diet Plans involve replacing your normal meals, or some of your meals with a range of shakes and supplements that are calorie controlled to ensure your weight loss. They do this because shakes can easily be created to be calorie controlled to an exact level; far more easily than creating whole meals with this level of calorie control. In many ways this tactic will work, if you can stick to drinking only the shakes then you will definitely be dramatically lowering your intake of energy to a level where your daily expenditure of calories will mean that you lose weight quickly. More...

Normally diets ask you to calculate your calorie intake with every meal, or to prepare particular meals and healthy ‘tasty’ smoothies using grass and flowers. These diets can take up so much of your time that you can feel enslaved by the programme. Most diets also recommend stepping up your exercise schedule by going to a gym or swimming or taking up a new sport. More...

The first Law of thermodynamics states that energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only change forms. What does this have to do with calorie controlled diet food? Well, quite a lot.
Your food contains energy and through eating and digesting that energy is converted between chemical forms. It still exists though and it is used by the body and converted into heat, electrical charge and most visibly, kinetic energy, that is, movement. More...

I have very happy memories of my childhood years in South Wales and, like most children, I loved Christmas. Of course the late 1950s were very different from today. My own children find it hard to imagine how we could have survived without computers, mobile phones and Facebook, but somehow we managed. There was a real sense of magic about Christmas day which for me usually started around 4am when I would lie awake in the darkness, my heart racing, to see if Father Christmas had remembered me. More...

Advertising and marketing executives have known for years how various unconscious factors can have a powerful influence on our food choices. One study to be published early next year has looked at whether the order in which we encounter food items influences our estimate of the calorie content. A group of study participants were asked to estimate how many calories there were in a cheeseburger. Interestingly, their answer varied depending on whether they were shown the cheeseburger first or a salad. More...

Salt is necessary for life as it enables our bodies to perform a variety of essential functions. By Roman times, salt was a highly valued trade item. Some websites claim that soldiers were paid in salt, although my daughter who is studying classics says this isn’t true. The Latin word ‘sal’, however, is the root for the English word salary. Familiar phrases such as a person being “worth their salt” indicates a value attached to this mineral. More...

The Sensa® diet, developed by Dr Alan Hirsch, was given to 2,436 overweight or obese subjects for a period of 6-months. More...

I deliberately don’t eat out very often and if I do it’s Pizza Express with the family or a colleague from work. As a habitual eater I usually have a marguerita pizza or a salad niçoise and a beer. I do enjoy my food but in my job I see what misery being overweight can bring. Hence, for me, going to a restaurant like Maze is a rare treat. For the culinary innocent, Maze is Gordon Ramsay’s restaurant in Mayfair and I confess I had never heard of it until an old friend invited my wife and I to dinner to celebrate his very BIG birthday. More...

In last month’s Obesity review, the well known obesity expert Stephan Rossner took a look at Elvis Presley’s diet which, combined with his drug habit would result in obesity and ultimately death (or as the coroner in a BBC Arena programme reputedly said, “a terminal event on the commode”). Towards the end of his life, Elvis’ diet was famously calorie laden. His favourite sandwich was a huge baguette, half a kilogram of crispy bacon, a jar of peanut butter and a jar of grape jelly (jam). More...

During the course of the conversation it’s not uncommon for me to hear something like this: “Yes, I’m nothing like as active as I was, but I played a lot of sport at school and then at University, so it’s not as though I’ve never done anything”, or “I seem to have put on a bit of weight in my forties, especially since I stopped playing rugby, but I still feel I’m a basically fit person”. More...

He is probably best known for the Law of Parsimony – also known as “Ockham’s razor”. This principle is popularly interpreted as “the simplest explanation is usually the correct one”. It is a useful idea which is widely used in science, though I would now like to introduce a variation of it – called Ashton’s razor – in a rather more specific context, namely claims made for weight loss products. More...

Some people claim it is a cost issue, though seasonal vegetables are about the cheapest thing you can find. Others claim the fruit goes off before they have a chance to eat it, in which case the solution would be to buy seasonal fresh fruit such as berries and freeze portions for later or buy small tins of fruit which are just as good for you despite what the “fresh only” brigade say. More...

As a result, we introduced a Weekend Off diet that allows you to follow the Weight to Go menu for 5 days and add your own menu, up to 1200 calories per day, on your 2 days off. The idea behind the diet was to introduce more flexibility and food variety thus encouraging you to stick to the diet without cheating for the five days, have a few careful treats at the weekend and thereby be able to stay on the diet for longer and so be more successful. More...

Exercise is NOT a dirty word! Physical activity is a fun thing, something that you were born to do. The human body is designed to work, and work hard, at tasks that the brain decides are required, and it is the brain that is the cause of the trouble when it comes to maintaining an exercise regime. Humans are very rational and it is very easy to be physical when it is absolutely necessary, this is where our fight or flight instincts are being used by our rationale, but if there is no physical danger or immediate need then your brain will be only too willing to let you relax and take it slow. More...

Britain has one of the worst reputations for alcohol abuse in the developed world, and the media is full of warnings about the dangers of excessive consumption. The general guideline is that men should not drink more than 21 units (roughly ten pints) per week and that women should stay below 14 units. However, even drinking to these guidelines can de-rail your diet in a number of ways.
Having a night out is always a lot of fun, hitting the tiles, tripping the light fantastic and dancing like no-one is watching, however you want to say it, getting out to your favourite club is a great way to finish the week. The fun reward can also make a big impact on your diet. Dancing in a night club for a couple of hours provide as much, if not more, aerobic exercise than going to the gym and spending an hour on the cross trainers, and it’s infinitely more fun. More...

Maintaining an average number of steps during the working week can be a steep challenge, but have you ever worn your pedometer over the weekend? After a full week of work, and then Friday night, which can be very busy, lots of people fall into the trap of waking up late on Saturday, never quite getting up and spending an entire day on the sofa. The result of this low energy expenditure is usually a lack of sleep on Saturday night, a lethargic Sunday and going back to work feeling like the weekend was a waste of time. More...

Vegetarians have the reputation of never having issues with being overweight. In fact the stereotypical view is that vegetarians tend towards the slender. Unfortunately this is not really the case; a vegetarian diet can be packed with high calorie foods and if your exercise regime is not sufficient to use all of this energy then it will be stored as fat. Snacks seem to be a large part of the problem, snacks, drinks and vegetarian convenience foods all contain higher concentrations of fat and sugars than you might expect. More...

The Weight to Go diet programme replaces your entire calorific intake every day, or for five days every week if you decide to take on our Weekend Off diet plan. The only extra food you need to add to your daily intake is a portion each of fruit and vegetables, to make sure you maintain your 5 servings of fruit or vegetables a day. Some people may be able to work with an abstract figure like a target waist size, or a target body weight, but there are others of us who find such targets distant, or cannot put urgency and importance on something so arbitrary. If this sounds familiar then what you may want to do is to choose a different target, something more grounded in reality and something in which the rewards are more tangible than just reaching a figure. More...

Yes losing weight happens when you take in less energy through your food and drink than you expend during the day but completely stopping your food intake creates extra problems, problems that are far more serious than excess fat.Your body requires a certain amount of on the spot nutrition to function correctly, these nutrients are extracted from your food by digestion, and absorbed into the blood for instant use rather than stored as fat cells. More...

A common mistake when taking up a new exercise regime is to begin on a programme of weight training too early. This has the effect of developing larger muscles that are powerful but do not enable quick motion. Why is this bad if you are trying to lose weight? Well, there are actually two issues with this: Issue one is that these large muscles actually increase your weight and your size. Powerful muscles weigh a lot more for the same volume as fat, so building the kind of muscle you see in weight lifters will impact your BMI and may hide any fat weight loss that you have achieved. More...

It can be hard to stick to any kind of diet when facing the added problem of avoiding gluten rich foods, especially when many meal replacements feature wheat flour as a thickening agent or to provide bulk to a calorie controlled meal. This means that many sufferers of Gluten Allergies have to go it alone with their weight loss plans. More...

The pressures of modern life can make it hard to get enough exercise to maintain a good rate of weight loss, even on a structured meal replacement diet. It is very easy to feel all alone at times like this and in a way you can feel like you do not have the authority to put your foot down when life tries to take you in a direction that makes it impossible to stick to your diet plan, maybe you are made to feel that you can’t take a walk at lunchtime, or that you must stay late in the office, necessitating a meal from a takeaway right before sleeping. More...

There is a big difference between being over-fat and being overweight. It is most important to understand that what you are seeking to do when you go on a weight loss diet such as Weight to Go, is to lose fat weight, not muscle weight, and that this may not necessarily mean a loss in your total body weight. This is because if you exercise regularly, you will tend to convert some of the fat you are carrying into muscle (lean body tissue). More...

Carbohydrates are a key part of a nutritious diet plan. The low GI concept is based upon changing the type of carbohydrate consumed within a diet plan. When carbohydrates are digested various sugars, mainly glucose, are released into the bloodstream the body reacts to the change in blood glucose by releasing insulin, a hormone that causes glucose to stored in the body. Low GI Foods release glucose slowly providing steady supplies of energy. More...
